Over the Easter weekend, members of Bedford’s Viking Kayak Club with their support teams took part in the 60th Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race. This annual event which is run over 125 miles starts at Devizes in Wiltshire, follows the Kennet & Avon canal to join the Thames at Reading It includes one tunnel and 77 lock portages, finally finishing at London’s Westminster Bridge.

The crews started on Saturday evening, paddling through the night via Newbury, Reading, Marlow, and Teddington to finish on Sunday evening. They had to endure freezing temperatures, snow flurries, a stiff northerly breeze and rough water conditions on the Thames.

Of the 118 starters, many from overseas, 60 crews completed the race, the fastest boat taking 17hrs 30 mins. Two Viking crews completed the race - Mike Newbery & Adrian Abbot gained 25th   place with a time of 23hrs 40mins while Mike Dodson and Toni Cientanni took 27th place with a time of 23hrs 59 mins. A third crew – Cathy Johnson and Kelly Sapsford were forced to retire at Reading after 13 hours of paddling through a freezing night.
